Team optimisation: Case Study

The challenge

Invest in the companies with the best chances for providing a good return on investment.

Our Action

Saberr were challenged to to use their Team Optimisation Tool to predict which of the short listed startups would receive investment and how they would fare over the short term.

The outcome

Saberr successfully predicted 8 of the 11 companies Seedcamp invested in and predicted the rapid failure of one company.

The challenge

Seedcamp is a pan-European, London-based accelerator launched in May 2007 by a group of 30 European investors, which provides startups with seed money, mentorship, office space and support over a year-long program.

Our action

Saberr were challenged to predict which of the 21 shortlisted startups would be selected to join Seedcamp in the 2013 autumn cohort. Saberr used their Team Optimisation Tool to rank all teams in the short list. The Team Optimisation Tool ranked the teams based upon the level of value alignment and behavioural diversity between the individuals in each team, with the top ranked team having the best average ‘internal culture fit’ and the bottom team having the worst internal culture fit. Saberr gathered no data on skills, experience or business metrics of the companies involved.

The outcome

Saberr made accurate predictions of investment and of early failure.

Saberr accurately predicted 8 of the 11 startups to receive investment.

Saberr predicted the failure of the company which ranked 11th. This was due to particularly bad value alignment identified between the founders.

Seedcamp subsequently became Saberr’s first investor and one of our first clients.

Saberr’s ability to predict the performance of early stage startup companies using the Team Optimisation Tool demonstrates the potential to transform the way investors assess the team element of potential portfolio companies — an element that is often cited as being one of the most important elements of making an investment decision.
